This was inspired by a book of photographs of contemporary French villages. I particularly liked the textures and contrast created by age and natural decay, mixed quality of workmanship and subsequently incongruent repair work, the structural distortion that appears as the timber weathers.
Although one particular housefront inspired the basic shape, this is ultimately a composite, with some features simply my own invention. It’s actually seen several incarnations; the original featured a figure in the doorway who was poorly drafted and ultimately saw the scalpel.
