Musketeer

English Civil War musketeer

Musketeer, Devereaux's Regiment

A musketeer in Devereaux’s Regiment, English Civil war period (circa 1645).

The basic impetus for this and the knight is the love of costume. The problem is that this is can be a very expensive hobby, really only viable for people with a good disposable income. The alternative is, of course, to paint things.

I probably picked this regiment because of the jacket. Red military jackets have featured in my interests for many years; my only piece of genuine costume is a Life Guards (Household Cavalry) jacket purchased from an army & navy stall at Glastonbury Festival. People often associate this with Sgt. Pepper, although the real inspiration  was Zulu (Dir. Cy Endfield, 1964), one of the first films I remember having a strong impact on me.

However, despite appreciating historical accuracy, I’m more interested in combining detail in semi-historical ways. You can see what I mean in the soldier for hire.

The historical detail was lifted from Chris Honeywell & Gill Spear, The English Civil War Recreated in Colour Photographs (Windrow & Greene Publishing, 1993). I have several editions in their Europa Militaria Special series, which feature re-enactment groups photogtraphed in full costume.
