Warhammer 40,000 Marines

Space Wolves Marine and Terminators

This was painted as a speculative piece. A friend was a keen Warhammer 40,000 player and opined that I was probably better than some of the folk that Games Workshop used in their published material. Games Workshop begged to differ and rejected the sample.

To be fair, this is a fairly tame composition in comparison to some of the absurdly epic images they actually use. I’m usually a stickler for realism. I’ve never quite believed that the larger, bulkier costumes worn by the Terminators could actually work. This is probably why I prefer manga Science Fiction like Masamune Shirow’s Appleseed or Ghost in the Shell; no matter how strange the armour, I’m able to suspend disbelief enough to accept that the charceters really could be wearing it. That said, I actually rather enjoyed myself with this.

Warhammer 40,000 is published by Games Workshop and the characters depicted are their copyright.
Masamune Shirow, Appleseed (Kondansha, 1985-89) and Ghost in the Shell (Kodansha, 1987-89) are well worth perusing.
